Welcome back to another edition of mood boards no one asked for where absolutely no one asked me how I’d style their kid’s room, but I’ve thought about it anyway and now I’m giving you the full breakdown with mood board #6.
This time I’m doing a cool coastal boys bedroom and I need to make one thing very clear: I’m not doing anchors, boats and Live Laugh Lobster. I’m going for that relaxed, slightly retro, effortlessly beachy look that feels fun enough for a little boy but cool enough that you won’t be redoing the whole thing in twelve months.
The palette? Dusty blues, sandy neutrals, olive, warm timber and a little peachy orange. Basically, if a really good beach day was a boys bedroom.
THE WALLS ~ THIS IS WHERE I’D START 👇
Okay, obviously I’m biased, but the Hello Saturday kids decor gone surfing wall banner is the piece I’d build this room around. The honey colour against all those soft blues is SO good and gives that little retro surf moment without making the room feel like a themed Airbnb.
Then I’m adding the seaside blue square bunting and my take me to the beach and surfboards prints. This is my favourite kind of kids wall decor because it does the job without taking over the room. You get colour, personality and that coastal feel, but everything can easily mix with pieces you already own. And these walls needed the finishing touch of Little Abodes Interiors wall arch decal.
And bonus points: it’s all super easy, rental friendly kids decor. No painting a feature wall only to regret your life choices six months later.
THE BEDDING ~ TRUST ME ON THIS ONE 👇
The easy days blanket. I know she’s mine, but genuinely, LOOK at her in this room.
This is one of those pieces I truly believe makes styling a kids bedroom easier because the colour palette is already done for you. Blue, olive, tan, cream, peachy orange, pick literally any of those colours and repeat it somewhere else in the room and suddenly you look like you knew exactly what you were doing.
I’d layer it with simple boys bedding, like the olive sheets from Big W and the Hello Saturday kids decor Yin Yang dusty blue cushion. Nothing needs to perfectly match. In fact, I don’t want it to. The slightly mixed and matched colours are what give this coastal boys bedroom that relaxed, collected feel.
And of course the GORGEOUS bed frame from Little Lifely, the colour, the shape, the texture, it’s all chefs kiss.
And if you want to change the room later? Swap the sheets to blue. Pull out the orange. Go heavier on the olive. Same blanket, completely different room. I love a piece that works hard.

This is where I make it feel like a kid actually lives here.
I’d add my Hello Saturday palm pennant flag because it brings that sandy colour onto another wall and gives another little coastal moment without screaming WE HAVE CHOSEN SURFING AS OUR THEME.
Then I’m absolutely adding the Hello Saturday kids decor Kombi print, the rattan surfboard mirror from Coco Dune and the timber shaka and palm pieces from Salt & Pine Store. They’re the kind of pieces that make the room feel cool and interesting rather than overly styled.
This is why I’ll always choose an aesthetic over a theme. I can hint at surfing and the beach without every single item needing a surfboard on it.
THE FLOOR ~ DON’T PLAY IT TOO SAFE 👇
Give me the blue wavy rug.
I love a neutral rug as much as the next person, but sometimes a kids bedroom needs the fun option. The blue wavy rug from Miss Amara pulls straight from the easy days blanket and Hello Saturday wall decor, so even though it’s playful, it still makes sense in the room.
If you want something a little quieter, the neutral checkerboard rug from Miss Amara as well is also very cute. Add a squishy floor chair from Hip kids and you’ve got the perfect little reading/chilling/gaming/throwing every cushion off the bed spot.
STORAGE ~ BECAUSE, KIDS 👇
I need somewhere for the stuff.
The warm timber wavy drawers from Kmart are perfect because they break up all the colour and bring another natural texture into the room. Then I’d throw in the blue crates from Bunnings for books, Lego, cars and all the random tiny pieces of plastic that apparently cannot be thrown away under any circumstances.
The palm tree hooks from Pineapple traders are the finishing touch. Useful? Yes. Cute? Also yes. My favourite combination.

This might be one of my favourite boys bedroom mood boards because it has that calm coastal feel without losing the fun.
For me, the trick is in the colours. The dusty blue gives the room that calm feeling, the timber and sandy shades add warmth, and the olive and orange stop everything from becoming one big sea of blue. Then my Hello Saturday pieces do exactly what I want kids decor to do bring the personality.
It feels beachy without being themed. Cool without trying too hard. Calm, but definitely not boring.
And most importantly? It’s a room that can actually grow with them.
