How I Would Style a Colourful Dopamine Decor Playroom

No one asked, not a single soul… but here’s how I would style a colourful dopamine decor playroom 🌈

I feel like dopamine decor has become such a big trend lately, and honestly… I get the hype.

If you haven’t heard the term before, dopamine decor is all about creating spaces that spark joy through colour, playful shapes and personality filled pieces. Think happy colours, nostalgic details and decor that makes you smile every time you walk past.

When styling a colourful playroom, my goal would be to create something that feels fun and playful for kids, while still feeling cohesive enough that parents don’t feel like they’re sitting inside a toy aisle that exploded.

For me, the trick is choosing a few hero pieces, then layering colour around them.

Here’s how I’d style it 👇

Walls: I always start because they set the tone for the entire room.

For this mood board, I used our Hello Saturday kids decor ‘Be Kind It’s Cool’ wall banner as one of the hero pieces. I love this banner in a dopamine inspired space because the warm caramel tone helps ground all the brighter colours around it.

I paired that with playful decals from Cass Danson to instantly bring energy, movement and fun to the room. Wall decals are such a good option if you want maximum impact with minimal commitment especially if you’re renting.

Adding bunting is another easy way to bring colour into the space without overwhelming it. Our Hello Saturday kids decor rainbow bunting works beautifully here because it adds soft pastel tones that still feel playful but balanced.

Floor: Once the walls are styled, I’d bring colour into the floor space.

Rugs do so much in a playroom, they soften the space, define play zones and make everything feel warmer and more inviting.

I love playful statement rugs like the flower rug from Double if you really want that dopamine hit, but softer rugs like Hunter & Nomad help balance the brighter decor if you prefer a more toned down look.

Adding a fun floor cushion or crash pad from Jelly bean interiors instantly creates a fun little reading or chill out corner too.

Storage: Make storage fun, not boring

Storage in a playroom has a big job… mainly hiding the chaos 😅

But practical doesn’t have to mean boring.

I love colourful storage because it doubles as decor. The Mustard Made locker brings such a fun bold pop, while still being practical for toys, craft supplies and books.

The Jelly Bean Interiors rollie bin and playful desk caddies from Cowrie & Conch add even more colour and personality while helping keep everything organised.

Because let’s be honest the prettier the storage, the more likely we are to actually use it.

Fun stuff: Add playful pieces kids can interact with

This is where the room starts feeling really special.

I always love including decor that kids can actually use and engage with, not just look at.

Our Hello Saturday kids decor Cool Kids Club hanging banner is another hero piece in this mood board. It adds personality while keeping the space playful and stylish.

I also included our personalised cushion, which adds warmth and makes the space feel more personal.

Alphabet magnets from Little Leo Co are another favourite because they bring both fun and learning into the room. They’re colourful, interactive and perfect for curious little minds.

Why This Room Works 👇

I think what makes this dopamine decor playroom work isn’t just the individual pieces it’s the mix.

It feels fun without being chaotic, colourful without screaming at you, and playful without looking like a toy store exploded. (A fine line in kids rooms, honestly.)

You’ve got:

✔️ Bold colour without visual chaos
✔️ Playfulness without clutter
✔️ Practical storage without sacrificing style
✔️ Decor that feels cool now and still works as they grow

That’s the sweet spot. 🙌

The end result? A room that feels creative, happy and full of personality, while still being practical enough for the mess, chaos and everyday life that comes with kids.
